BGU Announces New Rector and Deans

Ben-Gurion University is happy to welcome a new rector and two new deans: Prof. Haim Hames, Prof. Miki Malul and Prof. Noam Weisbrod. All three individuals have a long history with BGU and have contributed to its success.

Prof. Haim J. Hames, who has served as dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev since 2016, has been elected rector (provost) for the next four years. He replaces Prof. Zvi HaCohen.
Prof. Hames received his Ph.D. in medieval history from Cambridge University in 1996, and since then has been a lecturer in BGU’s Department of General History. From 2011-2015, he was the department chair.
In 2013, Prof. Hames launched the Center for the Study of Conversion and Inter-Religious Encounters as part of the Israeli Centers of Research Excellence (I-CORE) program with the goal of fundamentally strengthening the long-term positioning of Israel’s academic research, promoting national and international research collaborations, and assisting in the recruitment of excellent researchers.
His research interests include Jewish, Christian and Muslim mysticism and philosophy during medieval and Renaissance times, apocalypticism, inter-religious polemics, conversion, Bible and Talmud translations, and issues dealing with religious conversion.
In addition to the numerous publications that he has authored, Prof. Hames has also written a book for the wider popular audience dealing with Judaism in contemporary Israel, titled I (Do Not) Believe: Judaism and Israel, Past, Present, Future.
Prof. Miki Malul, Dean, Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management
Prof. Miki Malul
Prof. Miki Malul, chair of BGU’s Department of Public Policy and Administration and head of the Israeli Center for Third Sector Research, is the new dean of BGU’s Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management.
A native of the Negev, Prof. Malul was born in Dimona and earned his master’s and bachelor’s in economics at BGU as well as a Ph.D. in public policy and administration.
He has published more than 50 articles and letters in international journals, lectured around the world, and is a member of a number of committees in Israel addressing Bedouin settlements and regional development, among other topics.
Prof. Noam Weisbrod, Director, Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research
Prof. Noam Weisbrod
Prof. Noam Weisbrod, director of BGU’s Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, is the new director of BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research.
His research is related to hydrological problems in aquifers and unsaturated systems. He has been a member of several delegations focused on water problems in developing countries, including the Israeli delegation to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Namibia.
Prior to being named director of the Zuckerberg, Prof. Weisbrod was head of the Department of Environmental Hydrology and Microbiology and the director of the Jacob Blaustein Center for Scientific Cooperation. He has been a member of the BGU faculty since 2002.
