A team from the Jusidman Science Center for Youth at BGU recently participated in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), a national robotics competition, and took home the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award.
FTC Israel is organized by FIRST, a global robotics competition for high school students that is held in over 15 countries worldwide. Teams of students design, build and program a robot that they enter into competition with other teams’ robots.
What makes the Jusidman team truly special, aside from its members’ impressive work ethic, is its inclusivity; the team includes religious and secular youths, Jews and Bedouins, and boys and girls.
The teams practice four to five times a week, learning programming, mechanical, engineering, teamwork, and project management – skills they can take with them to college, a career and beyond.
The Rockwell Collins Innovate Award is given to the team that has the most innovative and creative robot design in the FTC competition.
In addition to building their now award-winning robot, the team also gives back to the local community by volunteering at a center for deaf children and at Soroka University Medical Center.
