The UN Looks to BGU for Desert Research Expertise

The International Conference on Drylands, Deserts and Desertification was held in November on BGU’s Sde Boker campus for the fifth time.
This event is organized in cooperation with the secretariat of the United Nations’ Convention for Combating Desertification, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and academic and environmental institutions from around the world.
BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research once again hosted this biannual event that has emerged as an important global gathering of scientists; industry and government decision makers; international development aid agencies; and other stakeholders from over 60 countries.
The theme of this year’s event was “Healthy Lands, Healthy People,” focusing on how people interact with drylands, and how drylands impact the people who live in and around them. The four-day program combined lectures, panel discussions, breakout sessions, workshops, field trips, and social events, and was a multicultural gathering dedicated to sharing information and ideas on how to make the world’s drylands more livable for their inhabitants.
Israel is the only country in the world in which the desert is receding, thanks in large part to the research being conducted at BGU.
