Israel 21C — Since its founding in 1948, Israel has contributed creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. To celebrate Israel’s 65th year, ISRAEL21c has assembled a list of some of the country’s top achievements.

Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, with its mission of creating a world-class institution of education and research in the desert, is a leading contributor to this list.

BGU innovations featured include solar energy technologies that help reduce the world’s dependence on fossil fuels; and a solar-powered water desalination method that makes desert farming easier and more affordable.

Also highlighted are water purification methods, created by BGU researchers at the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, that are being used to save India’s Noyyal River; and biotechnology techniques for aquaculture that help farmers in Vietnam increase their income.

Prof. Zvi Bentwich, director of BGU’s Center for Emerging Tropical Diseases and AIDS, is recognized on this list for his work to eradicate common parasitic infestations that contribute to Africa’s AIDS and tuberculosis epidemics.
