Tech News Daily — One of the challenges facing the world’s solar energy industry is the fact that China has begun to produce massive amounts of cheap photovoltaic solar cells, putting many companies around the world out of business.

Another challenge is a more technical one – how to effectively store the sun’s energy captured during the day so it can produce power around the clock.

The good news is that BGU researchers may have the “killer app” to help western countries compete in the solar manufacturing industry.

Researchers at the Ben-Gurion National Solar Research Center, led by Prof. David Faiman, are tackling the solar energy storage problem by developing a battery that uses a unique chemical cocktail that functions as a liquid electrode, and can be charged in four different compartments.

Like most batteries, the solution can mix without causing a caustic reaction. “Most importantly, it can deliver large amounts of energy to the grid,” says Prof. Faiman.
