Press Releases

NEW YORK, May 15, 2012 — American Associates, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Americans for Ben-Gurion University) President Alexander M. Goren was elected chairman of the international Board of Governors of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU). The election was held yesterday at the 42nd Board of Governors Meeting at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Beer-Sheva, Israel. He will serve a three-year term and is assuming the chairmanship from New York investor and philanthropist Roy Zuckerberg.

“I am both moved and humbled by the opportunity to serve as BGU’s chairman. I plan to use my term to further enhance BGU’s role as the engine driving the development of the Negev region and its international standing as a world-class research institution,” Goren says. “I extend my sincere thanks and deep appreciation to Roy Zuckerberg, the outgoing chairman, for his consummate dedication and leadership over the past seven years.”

Goren has been involved with Americans for Ben-Gurion University and BGU for decades. In addition to his current position as Americans for Ben-Gurion University president, he was a first vice president and chaired may board committees. He has been a member of the Americans for Ben-Gurion University national board for many years and a member of BGU’s Board of Governors for almost 35 years.

“Alex has been a wonderful leader for Americans for Ben-Gurion University and a great partner for me. It has been my honor and my pleasure to work so closely with him as Americans for Ben-Gurion University president these past three years,” explains Doron Krakow, executive vice president, Americans for Ben-Gurion University. “Alex’s enormous generosity and dedication to helping fulfill Americans for Ben-Gurion University’s goals and achieve the University’s mission has been exceptional. We congratulate him on his election and look forward to our work together in helping fulfill his vision for the University during his tenure as BGU’s chairman.”

The Goren family has been involved with BGU since its founding. Alex Goren’s father, Avram Goldstein-Goren, contributed the proceeds from the sale of a mill the family owned in the Negev town of Dimona. The funds it generated provided the initial resources to establish the Cukier, Goldstein-Goren Building for Humanities and Social Sciences. In the ensuing years, the family made additional contributions, resulting in the naming of the Goldstein-Goren Department of Jewish Thought, the Goldstein-Goren International Center for Jewish Thought, and most recently, the Avram and Stella Goldstein-Goren Department of Biotechnology Engineering named in memory of Goren’s parents.

Alex Goren is a partner in Goren Brothers, a money management and real estate company in Manhattan. From 1987 to 1994, he was vice chairman of the New York and Foreign Securities Corporation. Goren received an M.B.A. from the Columbia Business School and a B.A. in economics from Harvard College. He is married to Professor Brooke W. Kroeger, an author and professor of journalism at New York University, who after six years just stepped down from the position of director of its Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. They have three children and seven grandchildren.

ABOUT AMERICANS FOR BEN-GURION UNIVERSITY

By supporting a world-class academic institution that not only nurtures the Negev, but also shares its expertise locally and globally, Americans for Ben-Gurion University engages a community of Americans who are committed to improving the world. David Ben-Gurion envisioned that Israel’s future would be forged in the Negev. The cutting-edge research carried out at Ben-Gurion University drives that vision by sustaining a desert Silicon Valley, with the “Stanford of the Negev” at its center. The Americans for Ben-Gurion University movement supports a 21st century unifying vision for Israel by rallying around BGU’s remarkable work and role as an apolitical beacon of light in the Negev desert.
