Dr. Lonia Friedlander is the academic director of the She Space and She Space International programs at Ben-Gurion University (BGU). The two programs are sister educational projects, which encourage female high school students to be involved in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) studies both in Israel and internationally.  Dr. Friedlander moved to Israel as a Fulbright post-doctoral fellow and is currently the head of the X-ray Diffractometry Laboratory and a Staff Scientist in the Ilse Katz Institute for Nano-scale Science and Technology at BGU. In her own research, she works to apply laboratory spectroscopy and remote sensing techniques to the detection of heavy metal contaminants in soil.
