Homeland & Cyber Security

Here is an excerpt from a recent op-ed by former Major General and National Security Advisor of Israel Yaakov Amidror.

Israel Hayom — In many ways, Israel has marked several breakthroughs in terms of civilian cyber defenses. People from all over the world come to Israel to learn how to construct similar infrastructure and systems in their own countries.

Israel’s southern city of Beer-Sheva was selected as the focus of government efforts in this field. Choosing to turn the “capital of the south” and the renowned Ben-Gurion University of the Negev it houses into a hub of cyber excellence also coincided with the decision to relocate the military’s technology intelligence branch to the Negev, lending the University even greater academic prominence.

Moreover, the greater Beer-Sheva area, with its national importance, can no longer be considered the “periphery.” Global giants have already recognized that and, encouraged by significant tax breaks, are setting up research and development centers there, either moving them from other locations in Israel or establishing new ones.

If this process continues, Beer-Sheva will soon be a household name within the international cyber community, an Israeli Silicon Valley if you will.

Israel’s young cyber industry is a remarkable success story. A few years ago, only a handful of Israeli startup companies were known in the field. Today there are too many budding cyber startups to count, and it is clear that the more top-notch researchers our academia produces, the more their success encourages others to follow their dreams.
