Helping Bedouin Mothers Go the Distance

JNS – Dr. Sarah Abu-Kaf, a senior faculty member and lecturer in cross-cultural psychology in Ben-Gurion University’s Conflict Management and Resolution Program, and the first clinical psychologist in Bedouin society, has helped develop a workshop that aims to advance the lives of working Bedouin mothers.

The class, “Family and Work on the Path to Success,” is being run in partnership with SodaStream, with the help of their chief operating officer and BGU alum Idan Zu-Aretz, as well as other staff members.
During the three-month course, 20 mothers, who work at SodaStream, will learn how to deal with common daily struggles that Bedouin women in the Negev face at home and at work. The goal is to provide the participants with tools they can use to not just cope with the challenges of poverty, but successfully progress in spite of their economic situation.
The program was launched in Israel’s Idan HaNegev Industrial Park, with the help of the Harry Oscar Triguboff Institute and the Switch-Triguboff Center for Training and Advancement of Employment.
Dr. Abu-Khaf, who received all three of her degrees at BGU, was named one of the 50 most influential women by Forbes Israel magazine, as part of their Power Women 2018 campaign.
