Jewish Herald-Voice — The popular Kosher Extravaganza hosted by Americans for Ben-Gurion University (A4BGU) carries extra meaning this year for Houston’s Jewish community. The Monday, March 4, event honors Deborah Bergeron for her longtime service to A4BGU and Israel, while sharing poignant stories of Israeli resilience in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks.

The program at the Westin Galleria begins at 5:30 p.m. The 2024 Kosher Extravaganza: Remarkable Resilience event also will feature its popular multi-course gourmet kosher meal.

Bergeron, who normally designs the event, will play a much different role this year. She recently retired from her position as A4BGU’s Director of Development after 23 years of raising support and awareness in Texas for the mission of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU).

“BGU stands alone in its achievements, and Deborah has been the university’s voice in Texas and beyond,” said Elizabeth Grzebinski who, along with her husband, is chairing the Extravaganza. “She has been an eloquent spokesperson for BGU and will be sorely missed.”

The keynote speaker will be Prof. Ilan Troen, Professor Emeritus of the Sam and Anna Lopin Chair of Modern History at BGU, as well as the Stoll Family Chair in Israel Studies at Brandeis University.

On Oct. 7, Prof. Troen’s daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Shlomi Matias, were murdered in their home in Kibbutz Holit. Troen will share his firsthand account of the massacre, its impact on BGU and his own family and how he and Israel can forge a way forward.

All proceeds from the event go to the Ben-Gurion Annual Fund, providing essential support to BGU where it is needed most, including student scholarships, faculty recruitment, research in Israel, outreach and engagement and educational activities in the U.S.
