Prof. Eli C. Lewis, Ilse Katz Career Development Chair in Health Sciences Research at BGU, is breaking new ground in the field of clinical immunology. His medical research team focuses on unwanted inflammatory and immune responses. A remarkable topic of his research involves a molecule known as antitrypsin (alpha-1), which is naturally produced by the body during illness, and its beneficial effects upon introduction to patients with type 1 diabetes. This research also has applications for treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases including multiple sclerosis, leukemia and stroke.

Prof. Lewis has been awarded prestigious research grants by several foundations, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Israel Science Foundation.
