Approximately 45 percent of the people in the world live in dry lands, defined as regions that get 600 millimeters or less of rain a year, according to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev Prof. Alon Tal.

Blaustein Institutes for Desert Reseach are situated on BGU’s Sde Boker campus. Sde Boker is a small town in the Negev desert that usually gets around 40-90 millimeters of rain a year. In 2010, only 30 millimeters of rain fell. The Negev desert comprises 60 percent of Israel’s landmass.

The Americans for Ben-Gurion University movement supports a 21st century unifying vision for Israel by rallying around BGU’s remarkable work and role as an apolitical beacon of light in the Negev desert.
