A Spotlight on Brain Research at BGU

Medical Research

In the United States alone, one in four families contends with the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, depression, epilepsy, stroke or any number of brain disorders or conditions.

That’s why the United States and Europe are significantly investing in brain research.

And with the upsurge in research efforts and interest, Prof. Alon Friedman, chair of BGU’s Zlotowski Center for Neuroscience and head of BGU’s Laboratory for Experimental Neurosurgery, has predicted that 2013 would kickoff “the decade of the brain.”

Recently, at The Israeli Presidential Conference held in Jerusalem, teams of BGU graduate students and faculty had the opportunity to present videos about their groundbreaking brain research:

Students from Prof. Friedman’s Experimental Neurosurgery Lab screened a video that shows how the breaking of the blood-brain barrier plays a major role in the development of epilepsy following a brain injury.

BGU’s Laboratory for Rehabilitation and Motor Control of Walking, headed by Dr. Simona Bar-Haim, shared their video that shows how BGU’s helping teenagers with cerebral palsy walk better and gain more agility.

A video from BGU’s Cognitive Neuropsychology Laboratory gives credit to the archer fish for being the key to understanding different functions of the human brain, including delaying gratification and decision-making.
