American Jewish Press Association — Earlier this week, Larry Hankin of the Intermountain Jewish News won two prestigious Simon Rockower Jewish Journalism Awards from the American Jewish Press Association (AJPA) for “Med school — and survival,” a feature story on two Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) medical students and student-reservists, Shaked and Eliyahu, who visited Denver for an Americans for Ben-Gurion University (A4BGU)-hosted community event. Their revealing interviews with the newspaper focused on their experiences during the war in Gaza, grappling with injuries, the issue of PTSD in Israeli society, and their future paths in medicine.

“I needed to convince [my mother] that I’m not just a regular soldier; I’m a paramedic and I have a mission to make sure that everyone in my battalion comes back safe. I can’t leave them without a medical team.”

The article earned Hankin first place in “Excellence in Education Reporting” and second place in “Excellence in Writing about the War in Israel: News and Feature Writing.”
