Unlocking the Secrets of Ben-Gurion’s Archives

Jewish Ledger — David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first prime minister, once said, “The State of Israel, to exist, must go south.” Inspired by this vision, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev was established by Israeli government mandate in 1969 as a vehicle for the social, economic, and scientific transformation of Israel’s Negev region.
The Negev meant so much to David Ben-Gurion that he chose to live and be buried there, at Sde Boker, on the edge of the cliff overlooking the vast Zin Valley.
BGU’s Sde Boker Campus is home to the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, which houses the David Ben-Gurion Archives.
The Archives contain Ben-Gurion’s extensive collection of personal papers, diaries and letters. Over the years, other important collections have been added from the Israel State Archives, Jabotinsky Archives, Labor Archives and more, providing scholars with a unique window into Israel’s past and the early days of the Zionist movement.
Prof. Avigad Vonshak, director of the Ben-Gurion Research Institute for the Study of Israel and Zionism, spoke at the Mandell JCC of Greater Hartford on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. He shared directly from Ben-Gurion’s writings that reveal much about the man, the thinker, and the pioneer of the Jewish state.
