Jewish New Syndicate—Dr. Tiffany Schatz, a graduate of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), is now serving on the frontlines of Israel’s healthcare system.
Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Schatz earned her medical degree at BGU before completing her surgical training in the United States. After years of practice abroad, she made aliyah in April 2025 and returned to Beer-Sheva to work as a cardiothoracic surgeon at Soroka Medical Center, the University’s primary teaching partner.
Jewish News Syndicate recently interviewed Dr. Schatz, where she discussed how the war has affected her life as a surgeon. Inside the hospital, moments of normalcy persist alongside the reality of war. On Purim, nurses tried to maintain a festive spirit. “They wore silly wigs and took normal care of patients,” Dr. Schatz noted to JNS. “But the news was playing at the corner of the desk—a reminder that things are not normal.”
Dr. Schatz doesn’t regret returning to Israel and making aliyah last year. “Some people think we are nuts,” she said. “But this is where we are supposed to be. The war is not a reason to reconsider. This is part of the deal. This is our chance to help keep Israel going and be part of its future.”
