Excerpted from Haaretz — A new product, based on the research of Prof. Emeritus Arie Markus of BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research and researchers from the University of Florida, promises to increase the shelf life of most fruits and vegetables by up to three times without any synthetic chemicals.

The Food Protector, made by an Israeli company called Phresh Organics, uses natural oils to protect produce from the bacteria and fungi that cause spoilage. It uses a micro-encapsulated powder made of essential oil extracts derived from natural sources such as oregano, mustard, mint, and other plants.

For consumers, The Food Protector does not come with a learning curve. A bag of the powder is simply placed into one of the small, specially designed powder holders, and placed in the refrigerator drawer or bowl containing the produce. The powder slowly releases its active agents over time.

“We’ve created an organic and safe solution to fruit and vegetable spoilage, and we are so excited to bring it to the world,” says Amit-Gal-Or, product manager for The Food Protector.

“We treat strawberries, grapes, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, potatoes, apples, lemons, peppers, lettuce, and more, all in a single powder.”

Currently, the company is trying to finance production through the Kickstarter crowdfunding website, and has very nearly reached their goal.
