Come enjoy a guided tasting of eight of Israel’s greatest wines from Castel, Yatir and other world-class Israeli wineries. Assisted by wine connoisseur Steve Kerbel, we will look back on the history of the modern Israeli wine industry with Dr. Lauren Strauss, director of undergraduate studies in the Jewish studies program at AU.

Then we’ll peer into the future of Israeli wine with BGU Prof. Aaron Fait, whose lab and field research enables winemakers to grow grapes in the Negev Desert and cultivate them into fine wines. Wines may also be ordered for purchase from The Wine Harvest.

RSVP

To ensure we have enough wine for everyone to have a proper tasting, we must have your RSVP no later than January 3, 2019.

Please RSVP by January 3, 2019 to [email protected].

Prof. Aaron Fait is a lecturer and researcher in the French Associates Institute for Agriculture and Biotechnology of Drylands at BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research. He made aliyah from Italy in 1992. An expert in plant metabolism and stress response in crops, including wine grapes, Prof. Fait will speak about his cutting-edge research on finding ways to advance desert agriculture and viticulture in a changing climate. In 2014, he organized the inaugural Israel-Italy Grapevine Symposium, held at BGU’s Sde Boker campus, bringing together Israeli and Italian scientists who work in different disciplines of grape growing and winemaking. In Italy, he collaborates on experimental vineyards in the Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Piedmont region.

Dr. Lauren B. Strauss teaches modern Jewish history and literature, and is director of undergraduate studies in the Jewish Studies Program at the American University. A teacher of adult education courses all around the D.C. area, Dr. Strauss also was historian for a museum exhibition on Israel’s history which opened in Fall 2018, and she is involved in planning the new Capital Jewish Museum in D.C. She will present on the history of the modern Israeli wine industry.

Steve Kerbel, a career Jewish educator, has been interested in and involved with the Israeli wine industry for over 30 years. Steve has visited over 100 wineries in Israel and conducts educational seminars and tastings of Israeli wines throughout the United States.
