Yulia Sapir-Lekhovitser received her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in bioengineering from BGU, graduating summa cum laude. Dr. Sapir-Lekhovitser currently lives in New York City as a research scientist for the U.S. medical device company Cresilon, Inc.
As part of her graduate studies, Dr. Sapir-Lekhovitser worked with Prof. Smadar Cohen to develop an algae-based patch that repairs tissue damaged by heart attacks.
The long term goal of the project that Dr. Sapir-Lekhovitser will present is to create a functional cardiac muscle patch that can repair damaged and/or missing myocardial tissue. In order to do this, the BGU research team developed algae-based biomaterials designed to provide cellular adhesion and mechanical support.
