Prof. Shimon Rachmilevitch is the director of BGU’s French Associates Institute for Agriculture and Biotechnology of Drylands, and has been member of the University’s faculty since 2007. Prof. Rachmilevitch’s research is focused on whole plant ecophysiology and the acclimation to stress of dryland vegetation and agriculture. In his lab, his team studies the unique tolerance mechanisms of both shoots and roots that enable plants to prosper in drylands both in natural and in agricultural ecosystems. Prof. Rachmilevitch is currently the chair of the Israeli Society of Plant Science. He is also the director of the Root of the Matter, a new interdisciplinary center that includes 25 labs and over 12 companies in Israel, which was created to advance modern agriculture through the root zone toward the second green revolution. He earned his Ph.D. from Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has conducted research at UC Davis, Rutgers University and Harvard University.
