Dr. Nir Avieli, a senior lecturer in BGU’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology, is a cultural anthropologist primarily interested in food and in tourism. Dr. Avieli has conducted research in Thailand, India, Singapore, Vietnam, and Israel. His book, Rice Talks: Food and Community in a Vietnamese Town was published by Indiana University Press in 2012. Dr. Avieli is currently compiling a culinary ethnography of Israel, focused on issues of food and power.

He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore, and the Department of Behavioral Sciences at BGU. Dr. Avieli completed his Ph.D. in 2004 in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Avieli is currently on sabbatical at Middlebury College in Vermont.

The Negev Forum is an Americans for Ben-Gurion University initiative for professionals in their 50s and early 60s. The primary objective of the Negev Forum is to increase awareness and support for Ben-Gurion University and Negev development among this segment of our community, through educational programs and special events.
