Ben-Gurion University’s Dr. Leslie Lobel is a virologist and leader in search of a cure for the Ebola virus. For the past twelve years he has worked intensively in Uganda, studying the immune response of Ebola survivors to aid in developing a vaccine – one that will not only prevent people from contracting the disease, but will also neutralize the virus in people who are already sick.
A member of BGU’s Shraga Segal Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Genetics and co-director of the University’s Laboratory of Immunovirology, Dr. Lobel recently received a National Institutes of Health grant, awarded to a 15-member international consortium of scientists studying hemorrhagic fever viruses, including Ebola. He is the only Israeli on this team.
Before making aliyah from New York, Dr. Lobel earned an M.D. and Ph.D. in virology from Columbia University.
