Chai FM — Morning Mayhem host Howard Feldman recently interviewed Professor Daniel Chamovitz, President of Ben Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), who shared details about his visit to South Africa and reflected on the October 7 attacks and the impacts it had on BGU.
Despite initial safety concerns he was warned of in South Africa, Prof. Chamovitz was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception he received, including positive interactions at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
Prof. Chamovitz went on to discuss the tragic loss of 75 community members and the mobilization of 7,000 students for reserve duty, which significantly impacted BGU and its community. He praised his students’ resilience, noting their volunteer work at Soroka Medical Center and support for displaced individuals. He highlighted BGU’s diverse student body, including 700 Bedouin Arab students, and expressed hope in the younger generation, calling them “the bravest, the strongest generation in the history of Israel.”
