ISRAEL21c – Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) have signed a first-of-its-kind, three-year research agreement to collaborate on improving the health monitoring of aviation engines.

Prof. Jacob Bortman

Prof. Jacob Bortman, head of BGU’s Prognostic Health Monitoring Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has developed advanced diagnostic and prognostic algorithms to monitor engine health and predict materials deterioration, thus reducing accidents and maintenance costs.

Formerly head of Material Command in the Israel Air Force, Prof. Brig.-Gen. (Ret.) Bortman plans to continue the work he began while he was still in the air force. Dr. Renata Klein, of BGUs Department of Mechanical Engineering and an expert in mechanical health monitoring, will also collaborate in the research.

The agreement was signed with the support of the Defense Ministry’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure.
