Americans for Ben-Gurion University Philadelphia Gala Huge Success

Philadelphia Jewish Voice — Americans for Ben-Gurion University’s Mid-Atlantic Region recently held its largest event of the year, which honored several prominent members of the Americans for Ben-Gurion University community and raised over $4 million for Ben-Gurion University.

The money raised will support a variety of BGU programs. Most notably, the funds raised from the event will allow the University to move forward with its sixth Drylands, Deserts and Desertification Conference, which will be held at the University’s Sde Boker campus in November 2017.

Among the event’s honorees were Marla and Dr. Robert Zipkin of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Stuart Nemser of Wilmington, Delaware. In addition, outgoing Chair Jack R Bershad, Esq. was honored for 15 years of outstanding leadership, and Connie and Sam Katz were welcomed as new region co-chairs.

The desertification conference is hosted every two to three years by BGU’s Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, and organized in cooperation with the secretariat of the UN’s Convention for Combating Desertification, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and academic and environmental institutions from around the world.

The conference is a significant global gathering of representatives from over 60 countries. Guests include prominent global scientists, government and industry decision makers, and executives from international development aid agencies.
